Step up for Parkinson's

I'm Stepping up for Parkinson's

As many of you know,  Parkinson’s research (whether here in Australia or overseas) is very close to my heart as Parkinson’s disease has had debilitating effects for my gorgeous Dad for many years.

During the month of May, I will be Stepping Up for Parkinson's.

Your generous support will assist me in reaching my fundraising goal and allow Parkinson's NSW to continue its mission to enhance the quality of life for people living with Parkinson's, their carers and families.

Parkinson’s is a neurodegenerative disorder. There are currently 219,000 Australians living with Parkinson's. Of these, 18 per cent are of working age.

….and that’s a wrap!

Tuesday 31st May
Final km’s clocked! Final dollars raised! Thank you all 🙏🏻
Time for my final post … the final few words from the MJF foundation for PD

Learn what you can about PD. Sufferers will appreciate your efforts in trying to understand more about the condition.

Just tidying up the loose ends…

Tuesday 31st May
Challenge nearly over, well and truely met my targets, just tracking the kms for the last couple of days for completion!!
Still have a couple of top tips from the
MJF foundation to post though….

Enjoy time with the person managing PD’s carer too….. allow them to relax and vent too. Volunteer to run errands, cook a meal - it’s sometimes hard to ask for help .

Made it!!!

Saturday 28th May
Made it!! Hit my 250km target with a few days to spare!

Tip 2 from the MJF foundation for Parkinson’s….
Have a conversation about something other than Parkinson’s disease and stay patient if disease symptoms make communication difficult.
PD patients may speak quietly and in one tone with little emotion. They may slur, stumble or stutter so please give them time and patience.

On the downhill slope now….

Friday 27th May
Nearly done!! About to hit my 250km target and well and truely over my $1000 fundraising total…. Thank you all very much 🙏🏻🙏🏻
For my final few “did you knows” I want to switch it up a little and highlight things that you can do to help or support those with Parkinson’s and their families…... these are taken from the Michael J Fox foundation for Parkinson’s.

Do “normal” things, go to the cinema, visit the pub, go out to dinner…. Even if it means you have to make some minor adjustments to accomodate the disease challenges.

Days 22 and 23..

Monday 23rd May
Nearly there… not much longer to go…. Only a few more kms…..
Amazed at how quickly the days are flying past… overwhelmed by all of the money donated to this fabulous cause…. Thank you all.
Only a few more “did you knows” then a little change for the last 5 days…. Stay tuned.

Did you know -  Parkinson’s results from the loss of cells in various parts of the brain that results in the depletion of dopamine. Loss of dopamine means that the nerves in the motor system that control
Movement and co ordination are unable to function properly.

Days 18-20

Saturday 21st May
A bit slow I’m afraid…. Busy week at work and lots of rain have not helped…. On the downward hill now…. Around 10 more days to go and 90km to cover….
Three Did you knows today to make up for the last couple of days… 😉

Did you know- the most common symptom of PD is dyskinesia - uncontrolled, involuntary movements that can affect any part of the body.

Did you know - 40% of people living with PD experience dystonia - painful, prolonged muscle contractions as an early symptom or as a complication of treatment.

Did you know - Progression of PD varies between patients

Just a did you know for today… it’s quite a long one!!

Tuesday 17th May
Did you know - whilst smoking and caffeine consumption have been associated with lower rates of PD, Head injuries and  exposure to pesticides has been associated with higher risk of developing PD.

Day 15….

Sunday 15th May
Another 11km down today… not sure if the dog is enjoying this challenge as much as I am… she’s certainly sleeping well!!!

Did you know - PD can be hereditary but it is extremely rare.

Day 14

Saturday 14th May
Over half way to my goal and under half way through the month!!!
Overwhelmed by the generosity of all of my beautiful sponsees who have pushed me past the $3,000 mark- thank you 🙏🏻

Did you know - in hindsight, more than 90% of PD patients note that they had lost their sense of smell before the onset of their motor symptoms OR their diagnosis of PD was made.

Day 10-13

Saturday 14th May
Busy time between work and  pounding the pavements …. Momentum keeps on keeping on though and I’m slowly chipping away at my goal!!
Three “did you knows” to make up for the last few days….

Did you know - men are 1.5 times more likely to get PD than women.

Did you know - 20% of sufferers are aged under 50 and 10% are diagnosed before they are 40.

Did you know - common symptoms are rigidity and tremors.

Day 9…

Monday 9th May
Only 8km today but did spend the evening watching the most amazing production of A picture of Dorian Gray this evening… definitely worth having to work a bit harder tomorrow.
86km in total so far 🙌🏻

Did you know - scientists currently believe that in the majority of cases, genetic and environmental factors interact to cause Parkinson’s disease.

Day 8….

Monday 9th May
Another 10km down today, super blessed with the stunning weather we are having and lack of rain…. Long may it continue.
The dog also thinks she’s winning as she’s loving pounding  the  streets with me!

Did you know -  Parkinson’s is a chronic and progressive movement disorder, symptoms worsen over time.

First week down

Saturday 7th May
Day 7…. Another 9km on the tally today taking my total for week one up to nearly 70km. Pretty happy all in all, just need to keep up the momentum now!!

Did you know - every case of Parkinson’s is slightly different.

Day 6

Friday 6th May
…. Not as much on the “clock” today I’m afraid…. Well it is Friday!!!
Only just over 7km today not takes me up to nearly 60km for the last 6 days so can’t complain!!
Onwards and upwards for next week!!

Did you know - in 2021, nearly 10 million people worldwide were living with Parkinson’s .

Day 5

Thursday 5th May
…. No rain!!! … no treadmill required!!!!
Another 9km off my total and a relaxing massage to recuperate!!

Did you know - Parkinson’s is one of the most common neurological conditions affecting the population, second only to dementia.

Day 4

Wednesday 4th May
Another glorious Sydney day -and another 9.5km (give or take) walked!
Fortunate the weather has been fine to date… Not looking so great for tomorrow but never fear.. there’s always the treadmill!! 🤣🤣

Did you know- In Australia, 4 people in every 1000 have Parkinson’s.

Day 3….

Tuesday 3rd May
Absolutely amazed and very humbled by the generous sponsorship from all of you - thank you 🙏🏻
9.93km today… nearly 1/10th of my total over the last 3 days, let’s hope I can keep it up!!!

Did you know….. 38 people are diagnosed with a Parkinson’s every day in Australia, that’s roughly  1 every 40 minutes.

Day 2

Monday 2nd May
Another 12km down today…. 🚶🏻‍♀️

Did you know…. The number of people living with Parkinson’s has increased by 17% in the last 6 years….

… and we are off!!

Sunday 1st May
Day 1…
11km down…. Only 239km left to go!!
What a cracker of a day to start this journey!
Just trying to work out how to log my km’s.. not particularly tech savvy as many of you know so bear with me!! 🤣🤣
Also planning on posting a “did you know” re Parkinson’s  disease  to help with increasing awareness… we’ll see how we go!
Did you know…. Currently there is no cure for Parkinson’s disease.

Not long now….

Wednesday 20th Apr
Very touched by all of the kind donations to this very worthwhile cause…. Not long now until the km count begins….
Warming up gently on the GC pounding the beach between Broadbeach and surfers…. Just a shame it can’t be added to my May challenge!!
Thanks again to all
